The main goal of this year’s visit to China has was to finalize the collection of information (both written and informal) useful for the book I am writing about China’s strategy to reclaim world power status, and to discuss the draft of 2 of the 4 chapters of the book with my Chinese colleagues.
I was able to check some of the major hypotheses of the book with a group of Master and PhD students of Prof. Hu Angang (Tsinghua University), a group of master students of Prof. Li Xiguang (also at Tsinghua University), and the professors of the Zhejiang Party School in Hangzhou during a workshop organized especially on the topic of the book.
I had several meetings with Prof. Hu Angang (Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies, Tsinghua University) for an in-depth discussion and exchange of ideas about China strategy confronting US strategy in the Far East. I also had the opportunity of obtaining feedbacks from Professors Cui Zhiyuan, Yong Yonghang, Liu Qiushi (all of Tsinghua University), and Prof. Qin Huimin (Renmin University). Back in Geneva I was able to sign the contract that Routledge has offered me for the English edition of the book.
I also gave conferences at Renmin School of Public Administration, the Zhejiang Party School and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP) on “(“Public- Private Partnerships: an alternative to the provision of services and infrastructures by the State?”, “China, the West, and the Myth of New Public Management” and “Understanding China’s international strategy for the XXI century”.
During my stay, I had the pleasure of seeing the Chinese translation of my book on China’s reforms (published in English by Routledge in 2010) published by CITIC Press in Beijing: https://www.amazon.cn/%E5%9B%BE%E4%B9%A6/dp/B01LXPHUWP.
During my stays in China I usually visit the Swiss Embassy in Beijing to inform the Ambassador of my activities in China. I am sorry to say that, due to some health problems, this year I could not do so.
Let me end with a positive note. During my stay I had to go twice to hospital. I am glad to say that I have found an excellent hospital I can recommend if you are in Beijing and need medical care, including emergency care, and need to speak English:
